All GP practices are required to declare the mean earnings for GPs working to deliver NHS services to patients at each practice. This statement has been prepared by Chartered Accountants contracted by Wilmslow Health Centre.
“The average pay for GPs working in Wilmslow Health Centre in the last financial year was £61,156 before tax and National Insurance. This is for 3 full time GPs and 4 part time GPs who worked in the practice for more than six months.”
Because of historic quirks of blunt formulae that diverted funding towards areas considered to be more in need of NHS funding, Wilmslow Health Centre and practices in East Cheshire receive considerably less funding per patient than practices in, for example, Crewe.
As a result, Wilmslow Health Centre receives considerably less funding per registered patient than most practices in the UK yet, despite this Wilmslow Health Centre has had the fastest growing list of registered patients in Cheshire for the greater part of the past decade.
The graph above highlights the funding discrepancies across non-dispensing GP surgeries in East Cheshire. It is based on official data released in 2015, freely available from the Health and Social Care Information Centre. Wilmslow Health Centre receives considerably less per registered patient than most practices in the country. In 2015, it received approximately £100 per registered patient per year. The average practice in the UK receives £136 per patient per year.
In effect, although 12,300 patients are being cared for by Wilmslow Health Centre, NHS England’s “weighting” of the registered patient list size means that Wilmslow Health Centre receives funding for only 10,305 patients (Weighted list size Jan 2016).
If Wilmslow Health Centre wasn’t penalised for having a practice population deemed by NHS England to be less in need of funding, with a list size of 12,300 in March 2016, it would receive almost £443,000 extra in funding each year to spend on more doctors, more nurses, more diagnostic equipment, more appointments and better healthcare for the people of Wilmslow.
We feel that Wilmslow Health Centre currently delivers excellent value for money for the taxpayer for the current level of funding.
